Workshop Series on Qualitative Research
ICEE is organising a workshop series for its partner organisations from August 4th, 2008 on qualitative research which aims to provide the participants with the methodological skills for conceptualizing and executing a field research project. Including 4 workshops (3 six days workshop and 1 two days workshop) spread across 9 months, the course is structured through four modules, each dealing with one part of the research process -- conceptualizing and proposing a research project, collecting data, analyzing the gathered data, and writing a research paper. Having both distance and contact components, the series aims at developing an understanding of qualitative research through an emphasis on hands-on experience.
Dr. Anju Saigal, who holds a Masters in Social Work from TISS as well a Masters and Doctorate in Education from Harvard University, is the instructor for this nine month series. Apart from her interest and training in qualitative research methods, Dr. Saigal has several years of grassroots experience in working with Pratham during its early days in Mumbai. Her own thesis research was an ethnography on women literacy workers in Mumbai.
ICEE Partner Meets
Through seminars, conferences and partner meets, ICEE, together with partner organisations engages with issues of contemporary relevance to the education sector in India today. Two partner meets have been organised on the themes 'Early Childhood Care and Education' and 'Mainstreaming Educational Innovations'. These meets have been initiated to encourage a deeper understanding to facilitate the work of partner organisations through sharing knowledge based on experience, and to arrive at shared goals and strategies in our work. In addition, in collaboration with Vidya Bhawan Society, ICEE has organised a series of annual seminars addressing particular pedagogic issues and approaches during 2003-07 (National Seminar on Construction of Knowledge, National Seminar on Science Education, Cognition and Learning: Theory and Practice ), and in January 2007, the 'National Seminar on Quality in Education' was organised in collaboration with Digantar.
Mainstreaming Innovations in Education
The Mainstreaming Innovations in Education partner meet was organised during March 14-15, 2003, to discuss innovative approaches and experiences to educational reform in India, through both government and non-government initiatives. This meet brought together different partner organisations, eminent educationists and policy-makers to deliberate issues such as educational policy and innovations and experiences of working with the community. A report has been compiled of the partner meet that contains the edited transcriptions of different presentations and discussions that took place, and can be downloaded below.

National Seminar on Construction of Knowledge
The first in a series of collaborative seminars organised with Vidya Bhawan Society, the seminar on Construction of Knowledge (i.e. how children construct their knowledge) brought together faculty from academic institutions, teacher trainers, NGOs, teachers and others, organised during April 16-18, 2004. Deliberations included questions such as how concepts are formed and the manner in which they are mapped on to language, or whether language structure concepts, and overall, what processes of socialization and acculturation mediate conceptual competence and social performance. Through considerable research exists on these and related questions, little of it has percolated down to the level of actual implementation through practice and policy across educational institutions, and the latter still largely assume behaviourist paradigms to formulate policy and practice. National Seminar on Quality of Education
This seminar was organised by ICEE in collaboration with Digantar during January 11-12, 2007. The seminar examined how quality in education has been understood in different contexts, given that such conceptions differ greatly across various organisations, governments and programmes, yet the concept of quality is key to making education meaningful. Ranging from association with the term 'customer satisfaction' to more fundamental philosophical notions regarding the aims of education, knowledge and pedagogy, not to mention questions of physical access and infrastructure, quality in education spans a large spectrum of ideas. The seminar analyzed how quality has been understood in different contexts, and brought together views on how the education system can learn and improve from these ideas. The proceedings of this seminar are currently being compiled and edited and will be subsequently published. Please click on the following links to read the Seminar Brochure and programme:
