Publications

Advocacy for reform, innovation, and sectoral knowledge-building is a necessary part of attempts to improve the provision of early childhood and elementary education in our country. While our partners engage in advocacy and perspective-building independently, we also encourage such efforts directly though supporting publication of books and periodicals. Taking this intent forward, ICEE started publishing a quarterly newsletter to facilitate the dissemination of ideas that emanate from the work being done by us and our partners.

ICEE has supported documentation of efforts to work with government schools, a compilation of which has been published as 'Improving Government Schools: What has been tried and what works' by Sutradhar. In addition, we have supported a biannual education journal, Contemporary Education Dialogue, and Tulika Publications, a publisher of children's literature.

Improving Government Schools: What Has Been Tried and What Works

While government schools serve the majority of children in our country, they have witnessed a decline in services, and are increasingly accessed only by the poor and marginalised. Across India, a handful of efforts to improve government schools have taken place, with the conviction to demonstrate or induce sustaining change in the system. ICEE has supported the publication of Improving Government Schools: What Has Been Tried and What Works by Sutradhar, a book thatprofiles 23 such efforts from across India, and are of interest to practitioners and those engaged in innovation, change and school reform. The case studies include efforts to improve teaching in curricular areas such as language, maths and science, and attempts to introduce new subjects such as health, peace education and environment education. Contemporary Education Dialogue

ICEE has supported the Contemporary Education Dialogue, a biannual education periodical, gathers writings of academics and policy-makers on various topics related to education, particularly elementary education. The periodical presents an independent open forum for practitioners and researchers to sustain a critical dialogue on issues in education, which, in turn, allows for a refinement of theoretical and practical basis for improving the quality of education, furthering the opportunity to directly create reflective classroom practices. The periodical is edited and managed by an editorial board consisting of eight members, while ten eminent educationists from different parts of the country constitute the advisory board.

Tulika Publishers

ICEE has supported Tulika Publishers for the development and publication of children's books and studying their use. Aiming to reach out to large numbers of children, 25 titles inĀ  8 regional languages have been developed and published. Characterised by quality printing and illustrations, and a bilingual text to enable an easy grasp of a second language such as English, Tulika books allow children to enjoy what should ideally be an integral component of language learning for each child. These books now form an integral part of many education programmes and school libraries.
