Seminars and Conferences

Partner organisations of ICEE organise conferences and seminars to discuss and deliberate on issues pertinent to education. Click on he following to read the descriptions of seminars that ICEE has supported over the past four years.
National Seminar on Construction of Knowledge (2004)
The first in a series of collaborative seminars organised by Vidya Bhawan Society, the seminar on Construction of Knowledge (i.e. how children construct their knowledge) brought together faculty from academic institutions, teacher trainers, NGOs, teachers and others, organised during April 16-18, 2004. Deliberations included questions such as how concepts are formed and the manner in which they are mapped on to language, or whether language structure concepts, and overall, what processes of socialization and acculturation mediate conceptual competence and social performance. Through considerable research exists on these and related questions, little of it has percolated down to the level of actual implementation through practice and policy across educational institutions, and the latter still largely assume behaviourist paradigms to formulate policy and practice. Cognition and Learning: Theory and Practice (2007)
The third in a series of collaborative seminars with Vidya Bhawan Society, this seminar was organised during Oct 5-7, 2007, to scrutinize and debate the appropriateness of the concepts and assumptions prevalent in the discourse on constructivism and process of construction of knowledge. Taking forward from the seminars on Construction of Knowledge (2004) and Science and Education (2005) which helped create a forum for dialogue on these issues, the seminar discussed issues in epistemology and its relation to the constructivist approach and field experiences of organisations and individuals. National Seminar on Quality of Education (2007)
This seminar was organised by ICEE in collaboration with Digantar during January 11-12, 2007. The seminar examined how quality in education has been understood in different contexts, given that such conceptions differ greatly across various organisations, governments and programmes, yet the concept of quality is key to making education meaningful. Ranging from association with the term 'customer satisfaction' to more fundamental philosophical notions regarding the aims of education, knowledge and pedagogy, not to mention questions of physical access and infrastructure, quality in education spans a large spectrum of ideas. |

The seminar analyzed how quality has been understood in different contexts, and brought together views on how the education system can learn and improve from these ideas. The proceedings of this seminar are currently being compiled and edited and will be subsequently published. Please click on the following links to read the Seminar Brochure and programme.
