Supporting Innovations

In the field of education, the term 'innovation' has been used to describe almost every initiative that has attempted to differ from the existing system. However, there is an absence of careful assessment on whether the idea, method or device does in fact address the issue successfully irrespective of it being new. Most educational innovations begin with the objective of informing the larger system in a significant manner. Yet there are very few instances when innovative action has, in fact, succeeded in becoming a core part of the government delivery system. Educational innovations have tended to remain isolated instances of significant new ideas, methods or devices, and have rarely changed existing practice. The reasons for this are numerous and fairly complex, though they appear to lie largely with the rigidity of the system towards incorporating innovation, and correspondingly, with the inability of the innovation to adapt sufficiently to the needs of the system. At the same time, the need to continuously innovate is paramount, since innovation is critical for understanding and unravelling the intricacies of educational change. The ICEE actively supports NGOs and other organisations working in the area of education to implement and research innovations as well as work with the education system to understand the role of these innovations in changing mainstream educational practice.
